Baguio City

Baguio City is one of the 1st class highly urbanized city in Northern Luzon. It is the "Summer Capital" of the Philippines. Baguio was originally a part of Bengeut and it became an independent chartered city in September 1, 1901.

It is about 240 kilometers from Metro Manila. As the Summer Capital of the Philippines, Baguio is a favorite haven of local tourists, balikbayans and foreign tourists. Baguio is also dubbed "Convention City" as it has several establishments erected for the purpose of hosting conventions and conferences.

Baguio is celebrating Panagbenga Festival or the Baguio Flower Festival since 1994 and celebrated every last weekend of February when all the flowers are at full bloom. The streets are often filled with a parade of floats, bands, street dancers and guests. Various competitions, exhibits and flea markets provide lots of activities for visitors and residents.

The annual Philippine Military Academy Homecoming is also held every second week of February. It is graced by parades, programs and exclusive balls in honor of the PMA cadets and alumni.

Baguio also is one of the best place to visit during Holy Week. Some Business firms and organizations see this period as an opportune time to hold activities and events.

        Kennon Road
Image DetailKennon Road was for a whole century, the most popular access to Baguio City, Philippines. There are waterfalls visible from the road, and some of them right by Kennon Road at Camps 3 to 5, where your car will be experiencing a steady climb with gentle curves and bends. Clearly visible will be the mountains that have been mined like crazy by the Americans during the colonial period, and even after independence was granted to the Philippines because they retained mining rights over most of the country's treasure troves. While there is lush greenery all around Kennon Road, one will see bald rock faces where all the minerals holding the ground cover and pine trees have disappeared. The temperature though, starts dropping, and dropping further the higher you climb.

Image DetailKennon Road is about 30 kilometers in length and is divided into 'Camps,' signifying the establishment of mining camps by the Americans along the way up to Baguio City, which was originally both a mining town and a recreational facility.

        Baguio Cathedral
The majestic church located on top of a hill in the heart of the city. Its beautiful rose-colored structure is distinguished from other churches in the Philippines by its twin spires.

From Session Road it is accessible to pedestrians who ascend long concrete stairways of more than a hundred steps, although cars may easily enter the Cathedral grounds via access roads behind the Baguio Post Ofice building.

The Baguio Cathedral is said to have been able to accommodate up to 850 persons for a single Mass.

        Philippine Military Academy
        Image Detail
The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) boast of a long and illustrious history of preparing only the best Filipino men (and, in recent times, women) for military service.

The Philippine Military Academy began on October 25, 1898 with the establishment of the Academia Militar in Malolos, Bulacan by virtue of a decree issued by the first president of the young Philippine Republic, General Emilio Aguinaldo. Graduates were awarded regular commission in the armed forces. Its existence was short-lived, barely four months old, up to 20 January 1899, when hostilities between the Americans and Filipinos erupted.

PMA is full of tradition and pageantry. There are drill exhibitions on weekends, alumni homecoming and celebrations in February and graduation ceremonies at the end of the school year. Their manicured grounds are open to the public all year round.

        The Mansion
The Mansion is the official summer residence of the President of the Philippines. It is located on the eastern part of the city along C.P. Romulo Drive (formerly a part of Leonard Wood Road) and right across from Wright Park,

The Mansion is older than the city itself, and easily one of the most visited and photographed landmarks of the City of Pines.  The gate of the Mansion is said to be a replica of that at Buckingham Palace in London, England. Vehicles entering the compound pass through a great circular driveway and it is usually open only when the Mansion is used for an official function or activity. With its beautiful gardens and a well-manicured lawn, it is a favorite site for sightseeing and picture taking.

        Tam-awan Village
        Image Detail
Tam-awan Village is one of Baguio City's "newer" attractions, having been created only in 1998 by the Chanum Foundation.

Located at the outskirts of the city, it is an artists colony set amid a charming collection of Ifugao and Kalinga huts.

Getting there may be a little tricky but certainly well worth the trip. Once you enter the compound, after paying a minimal entrance fee, you can explore the grounds, which includes an Art Gallery, a Coffee Shop, the different huts and areas used for workshops, among others and maybe purchase a painting or drawing by one of the many well-known artists who have their artwork on display.
Tam-awan Village is also a venue for art exhibits, workshops and other activities that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Cordillera people.

        MaryKnoll Ecological Santuary

The Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary is located at 25 North Santo Tomas Road, Campo Sioco, Baguio City. Mines View Park

Mines View Park is one of the most popular and most visited park in the city and the most spectacular sight which you should not missed when you are in Baguio. You can see the panoramic view of Benguet's gold and copper mines and the surrounding mountains from the observation deck of the park.

Going to the observation deck, you need to go down a winding stone-covered stairway which is just close to the parking area. There are a few benches at the promontory where you can sit down to rest and enjoy the view. You can rent a binocular for a minimal cost.

        Good Shepherd Convent

Good Shepherd Convent is located in the Mines View Barangay. It is a walking distance from the souvenir shops at Mines View Park. The store is popularly known for the different products made by the Good Shepherd nuns and visitors coming up to the city who are familiar with items sold in the store always make it a point buy something to take back home. Items you can buy are fruit preserves, strawberry and ube jams, cashew and peanut brittle, and coco jam. The money generated from the sale of their products will be used for the different charities sponsored by the Good Shepherd nuns as well as for the maintenance of the convent.

        Wright Park
Wright Park is located in front of the gate of "The Mansion". The main features of the park are the shallow elongated rectangular body of water known as the "Pool of Pines" and the park circle which is on one end of the park. There are tall pine trees and decorative street lights line in the both sides of the access road beside the pool. You can take pictures with the Igorots who dressed in their native attire for a minimal fee. The are native handicrafts that are also sold at the Mansion end of the park by a few Igorot peddlers.

        Lourdes Grotto
Another place of meditation in Baguio is the "Lourdes Grotto". It is located on a high hill in the western part of the city. It is the favorite

pilgrimage site during Holy Week. To reach the top of the grotto, you need to climb the 252 steps. On the top you can see the image of the Lady of Lourdes. Devotees go up to the grotto to light candles and pray for their personal intentions.

        Botanical Garden
The Baguio Botanical Garden is also known as the Igorot Village. Is located east of Baguio's downtown area. It is in between Teacher's Camp and the Pacdal Circle.  It features native huts typical of the type of Igorot dwellings found in the Cordilleras.

Some years back Igorot dances and rituals were held in an improvised outdoor stage within the village. Local students go to the Botanical Garden for a day of retreat or just enjoy the outdoor environment. When visiting the Botanical Garden, you will usually find a group of Igorots at the main entrance who are dressed in their authentic native attire and regalia. They will be more than happy to pose with visitors for a souvenir picture for a minimal fee.

        Teacher's Camp

Teachers Camp is located in a large campus-like environment east of downtown Baguio along Leonard Wood Road. It is a training center for teachers from all over the country who come to Baguio during the summer time to enroll in special courses in education. Within the camp are classrooms, dormitories, cottages, dining areas, administrative offices, and assembly halls for different activities that are held there. It has its own athletic oval where national athletes who compete in Olympic events are trained.
