The name "Tagaytay" came from "taga" meaning to cut and "itay" which means father. A father and son were said to be on a wild boar hunt when the animal they were chasing turned and attacked them. As the boar charged towards the old man, the son cried "taga itay!" The boy's repeated shout reverberated in the alleys of the ridge. Heard by the residents, hunters and wood gatherers, the cries became subject of conversation for several days in the countryside. In time, the place where the shouts came from became known as Tagaytay.
The southern and eastern portions of Tagaytay City are covered by hills and mountains which is generally forests and open grasslands.
Driving Directions to Tagaytay from Metro Manila
By public transport (Bus)
- From Cubao bus terminus, take any of these buses: San Agustin,Erjohn and Almark, Golden Dragon. The final destination of the buses is Nasugbu but you can see the front signboard that their route is via Tagaytay. The travel time is 2 hours. Disembark at a crossroad called Olivarez square.
- Tagaytay is around 1 and half hour From Manila via SLEX Sta. Rosa Exit, then via Sta Rosa-Tagaytay road. Drive straight all the way to Tagaytay Public Market. When you reach the Tagaytay Econo Inn, take the right turn going to Tagaytay city proper.
Places to visit in Tagaytay
People's Park In The SkyThis park id formerly known as "Palace in the Sky".It is located at Dapdap, West Dapdap East around 8 km wast from Tagaytay City Circle. It is at the highest point of Tagaytay City and the province of Cavite with a blending of natural and man-made attractions, It stands on a 4,516 square metres of solid ground and overlooks four bodies of water – Taal Lake, Balayan Bay, Laguna de Bay and Manila Bay - including nearby mountains.
Tagaytay Picnic GroveTagaytay Picnic Grove is located in Barangay Sungay East. It's a large park that features huts and tables for picnicking, horseback riding, a restaurant, am eco-trail boardwalk, a zipline and cables cars on the gentle slopes of the Tagaygay Ridge. It is also a prome location for the finest view of volcano.
Japanese Friendship Garden
This 1,200-square-metre (13,000 sq ft) garden was constructed to inculcate the value of freedom, peace and international unity into the hearts and minds of the people. It is located in front of Development Academy of the Philippines Conference Center, in Brgy. Sungay East.
Marcela N. Agoncillo Historical Landmark (National Landmark)
The birthplace of Marcela N. Agoncillo who was known as the maker of the first official Filipino Flag during the Philippine revolution against the Spanish authorities. The different flags of the revolution are also prominently displayed at the site. Location : Marcela Agoncillo St., Taal How to get there : One can take a bus or rented car from Manila to the town of Taal. Once at the town proper, one may take a tricycle to reach the place.
On a windy slope of a hill in Tagaytay City sprawls a flower farm that keeps Manila abloom whole year round. The five-hectare flower farm has many varieties of flowers, such as chrysanthemums with assorted colors, gerberas, carnations, roses, and anthuriums. Location : Barangay Guinhawa, Tagaytay City. How to get there : From Tagaytay City, the farm is a brief 10-minute drive from the Aguinaldo Highway.
St. Anne's Shrine
The shrine is a small garden where a grotto of the Virgin Mary stands, surrounded by well maintained shrubbery and flower garden. In front of the grotto is a small grass clearing, which is conducive to quiet reflection. Location : Barangay Sungay, Tagaytay City.
How to get there : From Manila, take BLTB buses that pass by Barangay Silang Crossing to the Tagaytay Marker. At Tagaytay Marker, alight to take a utility jeep leading to Barangay Sungay where the gate of the Shrine can be spotted from the road. Travel time : About 2 hours' drive from Manila.
